What is classical art?

Classical art means two things: strictly, the art of ancient Greece and Rome; loosely, any art built on their ideals — balance, proportion, idealized figures and calm authority. The Renaissance, Neoclassicism and the academies all count as classical revivals.

When people say a work looks "classical," they usually mean it looks ordered, idealized and timeless — the visual language Greece invented and Europe kept borrowing.
