What is an art technique?

An art technique is a method — the physical how of making art. Impasto, chiaroscuro, etching, fresco: techniques are learnable skills with materials, steps and classic mistakes, passed from workshop to workshop for centuries.

Where a movement tells you what artists believed and a genre tells you what they depicted, a technique tells you what their hands were actually doing.
