What is applied art?

Applied art is beauty put to work: design, ceramics, textiles, furniture, glass, metalwork and everything else where artistry serves a function. A Ming vase holds flowers; a Tiffany lamp lights a room; both are also masterpieces.

Movements like Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau spent their whole careers arguing that applied art deserves equal rank with painting — and largely won.
